The Time Capsule

Ever need to buy a gift for that guy who has everything.
You know the one, if he wants it, he'll buy it.
So what can you POSSIBLY get him that he doesn't already have?

For me it was my brother. When he turned 40 they planned a big party for him. I didn't want to just get him a gift just because I wanted it to be something special. Something he'd never forget. He has always been a great big brother!! The gift should reflect that, right?

I racked my brain for weeks. It finally came to me in the middle of the night. I would build him a time capsule! I went to the local thrift store and bought a vintage suit case. I went on E-bay and searched for items from his birth date, his birth month and then his birth year. Obviously price was an issue and it had to fit inside the suitcase. Couldn't be too heavy since I lived out of state and had to transport it.

It was a blast to put together!!

An issue of Life magazine. Look at all those old ads! Amazing! A comic book released in his birth month. A CD of music from his birth year. A roll of pennies from his birth year. A copy of a first edition Dr. Seuss book released in his birth month. A wine label from a vintage produced on his birth date from GERMANY!! We are German and he loves wine! Why not! Besides I put it in a frame and it was beautiful!!

It was almost as much fun putting it together as it was watching him open it.

Turns out it was the hit of the party too. We put on the CD and passed around the various items. It was a great conversation started with his friends that I hadn't met yet.

What a great gift to save for his son too. "Hey look at what the world was like when I was born!"
